2-way Pseudo Coaxial Bookshelf Speaker

Project type

Speakers

Date

September 2023

Location

Quakertown, PA

A design for coaxial speakers using independent tweeter and woofer. Inspired heavily by the work completed by Danley Sound Labs and their TDS-1 studio monitor.

The waveguide was designed using ATH4 and the response was simulated in ABEC3 BEM software. The design of the speaker was done in Fusion 360 and I used the internal tools for modal response simulations of the enclosure. Internal components were CNC machined on my CNC machine. The driver mounting features and baffle required FDM 3d printing due to the inclusion of complex geometries. To create the rounded edges, I used a table saw and kerf cutting to bend 1/4" birch plywood around the exterior.

Issues

The largest issue with the speaker design was a sharp resonance peak (~8db) in the frequency response at 1khz. Other projects required me to take a step back from this project, but I would like to complete more testing and prototyping when available to find the cause of the problem. Likely causes are the "injection ports" between the woofer and tweeter, but issues with the waveguide termination and structural integrity issues with the 3d printed components could also contribute to this problem.
